Geotechnical Engineer

The Opportunity

We are recruiting for an established, highly respected engineering design consultancy in Central London that is looking to appoint a talented Geotechnical Design Engineer to join its growing specialist team.

This is an excellent opportunity for an engineer with 5+ years' experience to develop their career, working on a diverse range of technically challenging projects across the built environment.

You will work closely with senior geotechnical specialists and multidisciplinary design teams, delivering innovative and practical engineering solutions across new-build developments, refurbishment and complex structural reuse projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver geotechnical design packages covering temporary and permanent works.

  • Design retaining walls, piled foundations and excavation support systems.

  • Review ground investigation data and develop geotechnical ground models.

  • Produce technical reports, calculations, specifications and design drawings.

  • Undertake ground movement and soil-structure interaction assessments.

  • Carry out foundation interaction and building damage assessments.

  • Assess the impact of construction on third-party assets, including tunnels, utilities and underground infrastructure.

  • Assist with specifying ground investigations and reviewing contractor proposals.

  • Liaise with clients, contractors and multidisciplinary engineering teams.

  • Support junior engineers and contribute to technical development within the team.

What We're Looking For

  • Minimum 5 years' experience in geotechnical engineering design.

  • Strong understanding of soil mechanics, ground engineering and geotechnical design principles.

  • Experience designing retaining structures, foundations and excavation support systems.

  • Knowledge of UK geotechnical standards and design practices.

  • Experience reviewing ground investigation data and developing ground models.

  • Strong technical reporting and communication skills.

  • Ability to manage multiple projects and work collaboratively.

  • Commercial awareness and a proactive approach to problem-solving.

Desirable Software Experience

Experience with any of the following would be advantageous:

  • Oasys: PILE, ALP, ADSEC, PDISP, XDISP and SLOPE.

  • PLAXIS 2D / 3D: Numerical modelling and soil-structure interaction.

  • WALLAP: Retaining wall design.

  • AutoCAD: Design and technical drawings.

  • Python / Excel VBA: Engineering automation and calculations.

Experience working with London ground conditions, basement construction, deep excavations or underground infrastructure would be particularly beneficial.
